Using Humor in Public Speaking

When we laugh, it is scientifically proven that endorphins flood our brains and fill our bodies with positive energy.  So as public speakers, getting our audience to laugh often is literally the easiest way to success…if we can bring in a few genuine chuckles.  These tips will help you naturally rake in the laughter and take full advantage of it as well.

  • First off, put those joke books away and turn your energy towards self-discovery. Funny things happen to us all of the time and sharing a personal experience helps the crowd connect with us as well.
  • By the way, do you carry around a notebook to write down funny things that happen around you? Some of the funniest comedians in the world today develop their material this way.
  • Another way to remember the funny things that happen in your daily life is to record them. You don’t even need a special recorder. Most smartphones have recorder apps already installed. Take a minute now and check your phone and put it on your main page of your phone.
  • As you already know, your success in public speaking hinges on your actual delivery. So when you’re working with humor, try saying your punchline a number of different ways to see which brings the biggest reaction from friends and co-workers.  I practice my material all the time with whoever I’m talking to…and you should too.
  • One of the best ways to deliver humor is through dialogue. In dialogue you give the best lines to your guru so they deliver the lesson as well as the humor. We will discuss how dialogue brings your characters to life in a later tip.
  • Also, some of the funniest moments can come from interactions with the crowd, so do not be afraid to show off your wit if the situation presents itself. It is also the easiest way to silence a heckler at their expense, especially if your comment is in good fun.
  • Additionally, watch some late-night talk shows and see how seasoned comedians manage to generate laughs off talking about current events and local news. Since you want your humor to serve a point and directly tie into your speech, it helps if you can find the humor in almost anything.
  • Then again, getting a laugh is not as effective if you don’t follow up your humor with something important. Your biggest revelations should come directly after your biggest laughs, because this is when the audience is the most focused and receptive.
